More… um… Nightmares?

August 8th, 2008

I realize I must be at a happy place in my life. Lately, I’ve been having nightmares, if you can call them that, that aren’t particularly frightening, but clearly identifiable as nightmares. Earlier this summer, for example, I had this dream:

I realize with some dismay that my coffee is starting to get lukewarm, so I’d better drink it quickly before it gets cold.

Yes, that’s the nightmare. Clearly recognizable as a nightmare from the slightly horrified tone, and I even woke up. And yes, that’s the whole dream. And then there’s the one where I realized that I needed to close the front door, because I just walked through it and left it open… Oh no, (dun dun DUNN) the cat might get out!

And then the dreams went away for a while, and I really haven’t had any nightmares to speak of. But now they’re back–maybe all the time I spent playing Diablo II has warped my brain. (Perhaps the pixellated gore is disturbing me!) Last night I had a new nightmare. It was terrible! This dream was one of the horrible recurring nightmares that you get when you commute on a road bike.

I’m looking at my bike, enjoying its sleek lines, and realize that the front tire has partially deflated, even though I pumped it up this morning. I have a slow leak! Noooo!

Maybe I should see a therapist.

Montage: Diablo 2, Broadcom Linux Wireless, Stupid Car Computers

Vacation is over, and I’m headed back. Diablo 2 expansion pack has helped me stay sane. My god (is there a patron god of lonely programmers?) how many hours have I logged in this game over the last 8 years? Must be hundreds. And I’ve never played a druid before. Man, rabies rules. (How often do you get to say “rabies rules”?) This game is so fun.

And now, after two years, I finally have wireless network access from my linux laptop. (“HP” Compaq, you put a windows-only chip in my laptop, you suck.) Big props to the b43 project, and to the previous bcm43xx project, and to the people who reverse engineered the hardware. I imagine something like an order of magnitude more development time went into developing the Linux drivers than went into the Windows drivers, and the donations page lists a total of ~1500 euros. Easily an order of magnitude less than you’d charge to develop such a driver. (Mental note: donate.)

When I picked up my car from the body shop ($4000 for bodywork and paint and it STILL HAS DENTS), the check engine light was on. Well, too bad, I drove it about 1000 miles to visit family. Light still on. Took it to a garage, emissions system error… it’s the gas cap. Who designs this crap? What do I have to do to reset the “check engine your gas cap is loose” warning? I’ll shut up now.

2MuchWork Take 4 – Would you like House with that?

July 22nd, 2008

Well, here’s a fairly wild track I found in with the Absolutely project’s rough mixes. I don’t think I’ve listened to this since I made it, so it was as much of a surprise to me as anything. I guess it’s sort of trance house crossover or something. With lots of wild filters and stuff. Very 2001.

If you don’t like techno, don’t download it!

PS – it’s supposed to sound like that. :)
