Insulting spam emails?

September 2nd, 2008

I’ve noticed that spammers seem to have run out of nice things to say. They’ve already explained that I can be well endowed, or please “her” in bed, but for the last year I’ve been getting these belittling emails. The emphasis here is definitely on “little”.

The first one I remember was from november of last year (2007), with this title:

Don’t you think it’s time you stopped being a loser with a tiny pen!s?

Tiny? What a hurtful thing to say! Did I mention that I cried? (And how did they know?)

And then there’s today’s missive:

Stop being failure in the bedroom

This might refer to my inability to have meaningful sexual relations due to inadequacy, but it could just as easily be referring to my cleaning skills. Either way, it seems very unlikely that this email would convince me to purchase questionable, counterfeit pills from a Canadian pharmacy. Shoot, I can get questionable counterfeit pills from an “unlicensed street vendor” just as easily, and I don’t have to worry about identity theft.

The Harry Potter Effect

August 28th, 2008

Well… I used to be a nerd/geek when I was a kid, and I guess I still am. Let’s see, glasses, sporadically bad dress sense, can fix your computer and program your VCR, yeah. I have IRC on my blackberry. Yup, geek.

And then it became cool to be a geek, but somehow I’m still not considered cool. I know I’m a geek. I know geeks are cool. But I don’t get to be cool. That’s not fair.

I call it the Harry Potter effect. It’s cool to be a geek and wear glasses as long as you are also a professional model-actor, and as long as the glasses are just a prop, and they don’t correct your already-perfect vision. $80 haircuts help, too.

Harry Potter, you’re a fake. Go away.

A2DP, Windows, and Linux

August 27th, 2008

I don’t understand. Linux supports stereo bluetooth audio with the latest packages. With two lines in a configuration file to tell alsa about my headphones, I’m listening to music. Windows XP has no support except for what comes from the manufacturers (which isn’t that great), and Vista sort of has support, if you’re lucky enough to have a dongle that works with it.

Linux has better support than Windows? Well, they’re on a par anyway. I’m sure that for many people “edit two lines in a configuration file” is equivalent to “no support”, but then those people aren’t me, are they?

If I wasn’t so tired, I’d rant louder. Peas.
