Seeing is believing, but anecdotal evidence is not real evidence.
It’s easy to see things that aren’t there. It’s easy to believe things that aren’t true. The scientific method is formalized distrust of personal experience and experiential evidence in general. If you believe everything you think you see, and if you accept as truth everything you believe, you are doubly wrong.
Obsolete saying
Seeing is believing.

A penny saved is pretty much worthless.
It’s just a penny. If you had 200 of them, you still couldn’t afford a cup of coffee. If you religiously save pennies for 45 years, you’ll have about $5000.

Obsolete Saying
A penny saved is a penny earned.

You can tell a lot about a book by its cover.
Sure, you won’t be 100% certain, but the cover gives away a lot about what will be inside. It’s supposed to.
The best science fiction has cut rate artwork. Any cover that says this is “book 7 of the Blah Trilogy” will be vastly inferior to book 1 of said trilogy. If the cover says “By the author of Other Book” you should read Other Book first. Vanity publishings are generally easy to recognize and avoid.
Obsolete Saying
You can’t judge a book by its cover.
