TR is gone, and it’s your fault!

Tabula Rasa was shut down tonight, and the people online were largely positive to the end. But the endless speculation continues: TR was shut down because of lag, TR was shut down because of bad promotion, and so on. Well, all this is crap.

Tabula Rasa had some problems, most notably it was launched during a period when MMO fans were very skeptical of newly launched programs. A lot of recent launches had been buggy, laggy, and made of fail. So, when TR came out and was notably buggy and laggy, they immediately cried wolf and declared it dead. And only hardcore gamers remained, the kind who don’t read story descriptions, don’t enjoy the scenery, and then complain that they didn’t enjoy a game that had fun stories and beautiful scenery. If there was anything really holding TR back in the beginning, it was whiners.

But the whiners aren’t the sole or even the primary reason for Tabula Rasa’s financial failure. By the time it shut down, the game was nicely optimized and bug-free. No, the reason nobody played it is that you, the game-playing public, have pitifully poor taste. You didn’t like it because you’re perfectly happy to continue whacking things with a sword in WoW doing the same instance with the same people over and over. Or maybe you just don’t play games.

You non-gamers confuse me too. Games are fun. Why don’t you play them? I see this as a character flaw. No life is complete without regular exercise and an occasional game.

Oh never mind. I’m going to have a beer.
