Left Behind

Did Jesus tell his disciples he would return in their lifetimes? It sure sounds like it:

“Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.”

Many people today have taken it upon themselves to weasel around the interpretation by either saying a) He didn’t mean his own coming in glory, he meant that the Kingdom of Heaven would come, and it did, or b) Generation doesn’t actually mean within their lifetimes, but was a metaphor. Neither of these explanations is very convincing, is it?

I have a better explanation. My theory explains why miracles stopped happening, why prayers aren’t answered in modern times, and some of the inconsistencies in the New Testament.

What if Jesus really did return within a few days, as promised, to take his followers to heaven? What if Jesus returned within a few weeks or months, and took away all of the true believers? They went to fight with God in the final battle, and (assuming they won) live in Heaven. He didn’t have that many followers at the time, and only some of them would be true believers, so it’s no wonder nobody noticed that the Rapture has come and gone. Why would God need billions of people? Maybe he just needed a dozen loyal souls to sing his praises for eternity, enough to fill out SATB arrangements, perhaps? Who can say? His will is ineffable.

So, God took the handful of loyal followers he needed. The rest of them were Left Behind, and they knew, they knew they’d been left out. They were there! As a mid-level religious leader who has always known in your heart that your’e a fake, are you going to admit to the loyal, donation-bearing worshippers that God didn’t want you? Hell, no! What would make you more cynical than knowing that Jesus hadn’t chosen you? Being flawed, sinful, bitter people that God didn’t want, they chose to lie about it, and sell Christianity to the people around them. The New Testament teachings are based on their half-truths and selfish agenda.

This explains everything! Christians are right, except that they’ve had the time frame wrong. God’s Real Chosen People are in heaven with Him right now, enjoying eternal bliss. We aren’t important; that’s why we were Left Behind. This is why there are no miracles, and prayers fall on deaf ears. Why would God listen to the descendants of the unworthy?  He doesn’t listen because we’re not important. It’s bad enough that we’re tainted by hereditary Original Sin, now we also have the taint of being Left Behind. Twice tainted, it’s no wonder He ignores us. We must revolt Him with our grovelling and inborn unworthiness.

So, the good news is that there is a God, who is all powerful; he loves his chosen people, answers their prayers, and watches over them. The bad news is that we are not them.
